The COVID-19 pandemic offered an opportunity to develop and innovate in the field of online teaching artistry. Over the course of two years, the Thalea String Quartet created a number of online educational offerings that have reached thousands of young people across North America.

Below you will find examples of TSQ’s online offerings. Contact TSQ if you are interested in presenting this content as a stand-alone curriculum or in addition to an in-person engagement event.

Bringing Music to Life!

Bringing Music to Life, a five-part video series and remote educational curriculum, was developed in 2021 in partnership with Chamber Music Tulsa and Tulsa’s Any Given Child program. This curriculum was presented to every fourth grader in Tulsa, OK in the spring of 2021 and 2022. Bringing Music to Life introduces students to chamber music, the role of the composer, the concept of emotion in music, and music’s ability to explore difficult topics in history. It features compositions by Joseph Bologne, Daniel Bernard Roumain, Jessie Montgomery, and Anthony R. Green.

Hello Haydn!

A five-part video series and online educational curriculum developed in collaboration with the Caramoor Center for Music and Arts that introduces music students in New York state students to the roles of each instrument in the string quartet. Pre-recorded content and response activities were paired with virtual classroom visits during the May 2020 residency period.

CHAMPS Virtual Chamber Music Seminar

Developed in partnership with Austin-based Salon Concerts, this eight-week online seminar introduced middle and high school string students playing at a college level to chamber music through the work of Joseph Haydn, Antonín Dvorák and Florence B. Price. Students were introduced to collaborative music-making, practice techniques, effective communication, and concepts of emotion and character in music. The seminar resulted in a multi-track performance recording of Florence B. Price’s “Clementine”.
